GST registration is the process through which businesses or individuals register with the Goods and Services Tax (GST) system in India. It is mandatory for businesses that meet certain criteria to collect GST from their customers and remit it to the government. Once the registration is successfully completed, the entity receives a unique Goods and Services Tax Identification Number (GSTIN).

Who Needs GST Registration

  • Business Turnover Threshold: ₹20 lakh for annual turnover and for special category states it is ₹10 lakh.
  • Inter-State Supply:  If a business supplies goods and services across the state boundaries, they are the required GST Registration.
  • E-Commerce: A platform performing the e-commerce activity for their goods and services.
  • Non-Resident Taxable Entity: The entity that doesn’t have Indian residency but supplies its goods and services in India.
  • Casual Taxable Persons: Businesses that are temporarily operating in a location different from their main place of business.

Documents Required for GST Registration

  • PAN Card: of the business or proprietor.
  • Identity Proof: An Aadhaar card, passport, or voter ID.
  • Address Proof: This can include an electricity bill, rental agreement, or property tax receipt.
  • Business Registration Proof: A certificate of incorporation or partnership deed.
  • Bank Account Details: Including a cancelled cheque, bank statement, or passbook copy.
  • Digital Signature Certificate (DSC): Required for companies and LLPs.

Process of GST Registration

  • Visit the GST Portal: Go to the official GST website www.gst.gov.in and click on “Register Now.
  • Choose “New Registration: Select Taxpayer as the user type and enter your business name, PAN, email, and mobile number.
  • OTP Verification:Enter the OTP received on your email and mobile number to verify your details.
  • Fill Part-B of the Application: Provide details like business type, address, bank details, and additional business locations (if any).
  • Upload Required Documents: Submit necessary documents, including PAN, Aadhaar, business registration proof, bank details, and address proof.
